The news of suffering from a vascular disease and the necessity of possibly complex interventions understandably cause uncertainty and fear. Today, many diseases can already be treated so well by early detection and modern therapies that hardly any physical or psychological complications occur.
As an experienced vascular specialist, I take the time to inform you and your relatives
After all, trust is the first step to recovery.
It is not the treatment of a disease that ensures healthier aging, but rather prevention. This is not the only reason why I support the non-profit association “Gefäßforum Österreich” (Austrian Vascular Forum) and its educational health initiatives in my function as Scientific Spokesman.
Especially in times of a shortage of young specialists in vascular medicine, it is of great personal concern to me, also as a full member of the Medical Council, to further improve the training of surgeons for the benefit of patient safety.
My functions as President of the Austrian Society of Vascular Surgery and of the Vascular International Foundation enable me to support the younger generation of international vascular surgeons in their training in the best possible way and to promote the ongoing discourse between various international vascular departments and other interdisciplinary disciplines.
After my studies at the medical faculty of the University of Vienna, I became a specialist for general and vascular surgery as well as an endovascular & vein specialist at the hospital Wilhelminenspital in Vienna. I deepened my expertise during several stays in Great Britain (Norwich & Norfolk Hospital, Queen Elizabeth II Hospital), in the USA (Universities of Chicago & Standford) and in Germany at the Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich.
Since March 1, 2009 I have been head of the Department of Vascular Surgery of the Klinik Ottakring. I was elected president of the Austrian society of vascular surgery (2019-2020) as well as president of the Austrian society of surgery (2022-23). In my function as member of the board of Vascular International, as scientific speaker of Gefäßforum Österreich and as author of several scientific papers as well as a member of various professional associations, the development of vascular surgery, the enhancement of research as well as the education of the young vascular generation is of particular importance to me.

We are getting older and older. Increasing prosperity and better medical care are leading to longer life expectancy. However, this also means an increase in age-related vascular diseases.
Vascular diseases – as they supply our entire organ system in the body – can cause serious and severe illnesses: thromboses, strokes and much more usually lead to a dramatic loss of mobility and quality of life. Untreated aneurysms often end fatally when they burst.
